How to Get Away with Murder How to Get Away with Murder is an American drama television series that premiered on ABC on September 25, 2014. The series was created by Peter Nowalk, and produced by Shonda Rhimes and ABC Studios. The series airs on ABC as part of a night of programming all under Rhimes's Shondaland production company Viola Davis stars as Annalise Keating, a law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university who, with five of her students, becomes entwined in a murder plot in season one. As the show continues, the backstories of the characters become more extreme and more strangely connected. Through it all Keating and her students “The Keating 5” defend a series of clients – many accused of truly heinous crimes.
For her portrayal, Davis has received critical acclaim; she became the first black woman to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, also winning two SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, and the Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. Davis has received nominations from the Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Television Series, the Critics' Choice Awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series, and the Television Critics Association at the TCA Awards for Individual Achievement in Drama. Other cast members have also received recognition for their performances, with Enoch and Naomi King being nominated by the NAACP as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series at the GLAAD Awards.
On May 11, 2018, ABC renewed the series for a fifth season.

Viola Davis (born August 11, 1965) is an American actress and producer. She was the first black actress to be nominated for three Academy Awards, winning one, and is the only black person to date to win the Triple Crown of Acting (an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony, in an acting category). Born in St. Matthews, South Carolina, she began her acting career starring in minor theatre productions. After graduating from the Juilliard School in 1993, Davis began her career on stage and won an Obie Award in 1999 for her performance as Ruby McCollum in Everybody's Ruby. She played supporting and minor roles in several films and television series in the late 1990s and early 2000s, before winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role as Tonya in August Wilson's King Hedley II in 2001. Davis' film breakthrough came in 2008, when her supporting role in the drama Doubt earned her several nominations, including the Golden Globe, SAG and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Greater success came to Davis in the 2010s, where she won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role as Rose Maxson in the revival of August Wilson's play Fences. Davis was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her lead role as 1960s housemaid Aibileen Clark in the comedy-drama The Help (2011). But she won the Best Actress Oscar for her film reprisal of her Tony Award winning role in Fences (2016). She also won BAFTA Award, Critics' Choice Award, SAG Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Rose in the film. Since 2014, Davis has played lawyer Annalise Keating in the ABC television drama How to Get Away with Murder, and in 2015, she became the first black woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Her portrayal also won her two SAG Awards in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, Davis played Amanda Waller in the superhero action film Suicide Squad. Davis and her husband, Julius Tennon, are the founders of the production company JuVee Productions. In 2012 and 2017, she was listed by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. She is also an outspoken supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and identifies as a feminist.
